Languages for Life: Inspiring Curiosity and Connection at Repton Al Barsha
In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer spoke with Malek Hamdaoui, Head of Modern Foreign Languages and MSC at Repton Al Barsha, about why learning languages remains essential in an age of instant translation and AI tools.
Malek explained that language learning is not only about grammar or vocabulary but also about building cultural understanding, empathy, and confidence. At Repton Al Barsha, children begin from FS1, learning French, Arabic, and English through games, role play, and real-life contexts that make lessons engaging and meaningful.
He highlighted that while technology and apps can support learning, they cannot replace human connection. “AI gives artificial intelligence, not emotional intelligence,” Malek said, emphasising that true communication relies on understanding people and cultures.
Repton students also bring languages to life through trips and experiences, including visits to Paris and Barcelona and even performing on stage at Disneyland Paris, a first for a UAE school. Malek described these experiences as powerful ways for students to use their skills with confidence.
For parents, he encouraged simple daily involvement, labelling items at home, asking about lessons, and celebrating progress, reminding families that knowing more than one language is “a superpower for life.”
