ECAs and Friendship Groups: The Foundation of Community
Beyond the academic curriculum, a school’s community is built on the connections students make with one another. This was the focus of a recent interview with Tom Asbury, Director of Sport at Repton Al Barsha, who sat down with Helen Farmer on Dubai Eye 103.8’s Eye on Education to discuss the vital role of Extra-Curricular Activities (ECAs) and friendship groups.
In the conversation, Mr Asbury highlighted how sport and other ECAs are not just about developing skills but are a fundamental part of a child’s personal and social development. He explained that these activities provide an important platform for pupils to build a wider circle of friends, interacting with different age groups and from various friendship circles. This helps to create a deeper sense of belonging and well-being, while also building resilience, confidence, and a more balanced perspective on school life.
Mr Asbury’s insights made it clear that a vibrant ECA programme is at the very centre of a school’s ability to create a genuine and supportive community, where friendships can truly thrive, both in and outside of the classroom.
