Starting school is a major milestone for any family, exciting, emotional, and sometimes overwhelming. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer spoke with Ashleigh Thompson, Head of Junior School at Repton Al Barsha, about what true school readiness means and how parents can support their children through this important transition.

Ashleigh explained that being ready for school is not about children learning to write their names or count to ten, but about developing curiosity, confidence, and independence. She highlighted the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum’s focus on communication, physical development, and emotional wellbeing as the essential building blocks for future learning.

She offered practical guidance for parents, such as encouraging children to handle small everyday tasks independently, such as opening their lunchboxes, putting on shoes, or using the bathroom. Emotional readiness, she noted, is equally important, as children learn to separate confidently from their parents and adjust to new routines.

Ashleigh also emphasised the value of play as a natural and powerful way for children to acquire new skills, solve problems, and build social connections. Through supportive programmes like “Wrapped in Readiness”, Repton Al Barsha helps young learners transition smoothly and happily into school life.

This conversation served as a reassuring reminder that true school readiness is rooted in confidence, curiosity, and the joy of discovering the world around them.
